Process Sample

I start building a painting using color layers on the canvas ground to inform the subsequent layers. My method consists of indirect painting, which involves a series of stages leading to the final effect. This indirect method, like traditional painting of the past, requires rational planning in advance. Layers of color are placed over a monochrome underpainting. The preliminary underpainting serves as a framework for the composition. Contrasting elements are juxtaposed: complementary color opposites, darks and lights, biomorphic and geometric forms, etc. I use impastos to create texture, line to highlight the significance of drawing, diagonals for a dynamic effect, and the language of color harmonies and composition.
